In a bold play, Windows Vista showed us that once again what it says on the box may not be true.
In a study by PC World this month, Ready Boost, a feature of Vista proclaiming to enhance the speed of Windows-based computing when coupled with a USB flash drive plugged in to the computer has failed to practice what it preached. They found that “while ReadyBoost may speed up Vista a tiny bit, it can also slow the OS down in some instances,” says Lincoln Spector, writer for PC World.
In theory, this is a great idea, A flash drive that takes the strain and pain off a hard working PC. But the truth of the matter is you can already do that with a regular flash drive! To help your PC or Mac to chug a little faster there are a few simple things to do:
- Use your virus protection on a regular basis, just turn on an auto-timed cleansing while you aren’t there so you won’t turn it off. (face it-we have all turned those off before!)
- Turn your computer off once in a while if you don’t already. We all just turn the monitor off and walk away in case we need to get on real fast some time. In our fast-paced world, remember that you can probably afford to take the minute to turn it on again.
- Lastly and most importantly, USE YOUR FLASH DRIVE! This handy little device can save you a lot of heartache with your computer. Use it as a back up for important files when your PC crashes and burns. Use it to hold your music to relieve the congestion in your hard drive. Or just plug it in and add a beautiful glowing led light touch to your computer tower…..
Ok, so ReadyBoost may not be the Red Bull for computers but at least it’s official that people remain skeptical enough to test things no matter how much we want it to work.
Lastly, for the world of Windows and all their promises, we see once again that all the hype truly means wait at least 9 months before going near their new OS no matter what they say.
